Artist Statement

Several years ago, I began doing genealogy to explore the lives of my Ancestors, free and enslaved. My research coupled with my love of gardening became my primary sources of inspiration . My DNA analysis revealed my West African roots and my genealogical research provided information into the lives of my Ancestors.

Expressing myself in clay allows me to share parts of their lives, their history as well as our African roots and culture. This will often take the form of an African styled mask, an African fabric pattern or the dark brown clay I use for the bodies of any figures I create.

Often, I feel that my Ancestors are whispering in my ear their approval or disapproval!

I prefer to create nonfunctional art. It allows me to step outside of the box and be creative in my work. My art will often be Afrocentric or have elements of nature. While I may create similar pieces, each will be unique!

There is a saying that the clay will tell you what it wants to be.The infinite variables in the clay types, in colors and combinations of glazes and in the firing process make working in clay a marvelous adventure!
